The house of fashion designer Jules-François CRAHAY is for sale

Updated: Jan 2

This residence of almost 500m2 will delight lovers of old stone and haute-couture.

This is an artist's residence. Located in the small commune of BAGNOLS-EN-FORÊT (83600), this property was completely redesigned by the Belgian fashion designer Jules-François CRAHAY and his partner in the 1970s and 80s. Originally designed around an old ruined farmhouse, the house was also a residence for artists and painters. Many traces of this era are still visible in places, notably in the guest house. Just like the large-format canvases that still line the walls of the main property. Jules-François CRAHAY was a Franco-Belgian couturier renowned in the 1950s for his 'strict and loose' designs worn by celebrities such as Claudia CARDINALE and Jackie KENNEDY. Parisian haute-couture circles even pitted him against his illustrious contemporary, a certain Christian DIOR. In 2024, the Fashion Museum Mode et Dentelle in Brussels will pay tribute to him by exhibiting some of his creations for Nina Ricci and LANVIN, of which he was artistic director. The current owner - a former British publicist - bought the property from the couturier's friend more than 30 years ago. He has taken care to preserve the spirit of the place and even some of the couple's personal archives, including hundreds of fashion magazines from the period.

Built with his own hands

The 478 m2 estate is set amidst the vineyards of the eastern Var. It comprises two main farmhouses surrounded by outbuildings (caretaker's cottage, guest house, workshop). Set in 3 hectares of wooded parkland with swimming pool, pool house, bowling green and tennis court, it offers around ten bedrooms. Horses can be kept in the almost flat grounds - a renowned riding school is less than 1 km away - and the plot adjoins part of a Var vineyard: Château du Rouët.

Located 20 minutes away from the sea, 45 minutes from Nice airport, not far away from a private aerodrome (business aviation), near St Raphaël and Fayence. Helicopter landing possible. Incomparable charm.

An exceptional residence in a green setting
